After learning about all of the negative impacts the older Disney movies have on children, have the newer ones had more of a positive impact on them? The most recent Disney movie that has come out is Frozen. This movie is believed to be the “Most Progressive Disney Movie Ever Made” according to PolicyMic. There were seven reasons given why PolicyMic believes this which include:
1) Elsa and Anna’s Parents were abusive
1) Elsa and Anna’s Parents were abusive
PolicyMic says, “Disney takes a much-needed step forward by portraying realistic parental abuse that affects many children today.”
I believe that Disney made huge improvements in making Elsa's parents seem more realistic! Parents are not perfect and do make mistakes.
2) Elsa’s Self-Empowerment

2) Elsa’s Self-Empowerment
Here Disney shows that it is okay to yourself and that you shouldn’t have to change yourself for others and what they think.
In my opinion, I think that everyone should be happy regardless of who is trying to put them down. You have to do what makes you happy at the end of the day.
3) Anna's Clumsiness, Awkwardness and Honesty

3) Anna's Clumsiness, Awkwardness and Honesty
Disney makes Anna very human-like in how one acts around certain people, which makes the movie very funny and realistic.
Anna is absolutely hilarious! Every young child, teenager, and adult can relate to Anna. I personally can't stop laughing at some of the scenes she is in, because I can relate to her so well.
4) Kristoff's Ability to Lead Next to a Strong Woman

5) Oaken's Gay Family
Disney is putting problems of today into movies so that we can have some perspective.
In this article from Huffington Post it shows the counterargument of showing a homosexual family in a children’s movie.
I think that showing Oaken and his family is perfectly okay in this movie.
1. The family is only showed for about five seconds if that, so a normal kid wouldn’t even notice that it is a gay family.
2. Children don’t even know what a homosexual family is so how would they be able to recognize one if they saw one? Exactly, they wouldn’t!
3. Having gays around is becoming more of a norm around the United States. Because of this, I think that children should know more about our culture and what is going on instead of just denying it.
The world around us is obviously not the same as it used to be. Everyone is conforming to things around them today and Disney is only continuing the trend.
6) Arendelle's Unquestioning Acceptance of a Queen

Disney finally made a princess/ queen that is in charge of actually ruling a governing body unlike any other Disney movie.
7) Everyone's Reaction to Anna's Foolish Engagement

According to PolicyMic, Disney has officially taken care of the fact that you can’t marry someone you just met, and that all women don’t have to get married if they don’t want to.
FINALLY! Disney makes it clear that you can't marry someone you've only known for a day!!! Yes love at first sight is possible; however, to marry someone after only one day of knowing someone you certainly cannot get married to them!
I completely agree with things PolicyMic said in their article. Frozen illustrates a more realistic view towards the audience. By doing this I believe Frozen has also appealed to a wider variety of people instead of just children. College kids, including myself, have seen the movie and have laughed their heads off at certain scenes within the movie. I believe that Disney’s Frozen has also made the movie more relatable. Many youngsters can relate since they do have siblings that don’t always want to play with them and even though it’s not because they have magical powers no one can know about, they don’t always play together whether it’s because they can’t or they simply don’t want to. Kids can also relate because sometimes playing with a sibling can get dangerous if you aren’t careful. Teenagers can relate because it shows that guys aren’t always what they seem. They might always sweet-talk you, but that doesn’t mean their intentions are honorable.
These reasons show why Frozen is making a step in the right direction for Disney. It has a representation of modern people, problems and ideas that are revolutionary. Disney has a good start with Frozen and has a bright future ahead. Hopefully Disney will continue these themes in upcoming movies as well.
